Yes it really helps in ranking your website. If you use Google+, then do submission of your business into Local Business List from there. But keep doing SEO of your website.
Just like rest of the social media links.. and profiles.. the google+ lets you connect with your audience and also we can let google know that we are the publisher of the website through google+ page and we can link it as a author and also google map for business also can be done with the google+ page. So more or less it is important to have a page..
