Link building is something you should do the right way because it is a time consuming activity. I usually have the following in mind while building backlinks.
Anchor Text: I use a mixture of different keywords in my anchor text to avoid the over-optimization penalty. I use variations of my keywords and other words like click here, my site's URL etc.
Dofollow Back Links: I get both nofollow and dofollow links to make it look natural. But I get more of dofollow.
Quality One-Way Back Links: You can get these by guest posting on relevant blogs with high page rank. I avoid link exchanges but a little won't hurt your site.
Number of Back Links: It is the quality of the backlinks that matters, not the number.
Deep Linking Strategy: This has to do with creating backlinks to all the important pages on your site and not only to your home page. This also gives your link profile a natural look in the eyes of search engines.
