I noticed many Twitter accounts that I followed back are welcoming their followers. They simply post a Tweet something like "Thanks and welcome to our new follower @TwitterUser".
Is there any benefit from welcoming your followers?
It depends on who the followers are. I am usually ok with any new followers as long as they are not spamers. I don't notice much benefits since most of my followers just want to make new friends.

There are tools to do that. And I don't like that kind of automation.
It works when you welcome real followers. You start a relationship with the new follower. If that follower really share the same interest as you, you'll be added to list, retweeted, answered and so on because you're real to them; not just another spam twitter account.
