HTTP 404 Not Found Error proposes that the web page you were trying to reach is not found on the server which means that either the page has been removed or moved. You should redirect all 404 error pages to the homepage or another relevant page.

There are different types of 404s i.e. external, outgoing and internal.
External 404 occurs when someone else is linking to the broken page of your website. This type does not affects rankings.
Ongoing 404 occurs when link from your website to another website is broken and it returns a 404. This too does not affects rankings.
Internal 404 occurs when website itself is linking to different page which is ‘not found’ on your website. This type affects rankings.

Yes, We have to use 404 Error WP plugins to redirect them to homepage.

404 is error. And Errors always effect on the Website. Toy must be redirect to the live page or home page.
