What is the best audio player for playing music on a computer in terms of sound quality (excluding itunes)?

VLC is good for video but doesn't have many features for playing audio. Windows Media Player is an all rounder but still not all that great. I'm using Real Player which is simple and has decent features, winamp was getting a bit complicated but recall it as being a very good audio player.

What do you recommend?

In terms of sound quality, they are not going to differ. The formats will be read equally across the programs. Some may have equalisers you can play with, but the most important factor is the bitrate of your audio, decent speakers and maybe a sound card.
